Abstract In this work we test the numerical behaviour of matrix-valued fields approximated by finite element subspaces $$[{{\,\mathrm{\textit{H}^1}\,}}]^{3\times 3}$$ [ H 1 ] 3 × , $$[ H (\textrm{curl}{})]^3$$ ( curl ) and $$ (\textrm{sym}\, \textrm{Curl}{})$$ sym Curl for a linear abstract variational problem connected to relaxed micromorphic model. The formulation corresponding elements is introduced, followed benchmarks our conclusions. continuum model reduces continuity assumptions classical replacing full gradient microdistortion in free energy functional with Curl. This results larger solution space microdistortion, namely place $$[{{\,\mathrm{\textit{H}^1}\,}}]^{3 \times . conditions on can be further weakened taking only symmetric part As shown recent works, new appropriate then newly introduced gives rise differential complex theory.

New curl conforming finite elements on parallelepiped
In this paper, we introduce new curl conforming elements of higher order (k ≥ 1) on parallelepiped. This element has smaller number of degrees of freedom than the well knownNedelec spaces do, however, one can still obtain the same convergence order. To prove error estimate for curl conforming finite element methods, we also define the corresponding divergence conforming elements. Some efficient...
متن کاملAlgebraic Multigrid for High-Order Hierarchical H(curl) Finite Elements
Classic multigrid methods are often not directly applicable to nonelliptic problems such as curl-type partial differential equations (PDEs). Curl-curl PDEs require specialized smoothers that are compatible with the gradient-like (near) null space. Moreover, recent developments have focused on replicating the grad-curl-div de Rham complex in a multilevel hierarchy through smoothed aggregation ba...
متن کاملHexahedral H(div) and H(curl) Finite Elements
We study the approximation properties of some finite element subspaces of H(div; Ω) andH(curl ; Ω) defined on hexahedral meshes in three dimensions. This work extends results previously obtained for quadrilateral H(div; Ω) finite elements and for quadrilateral scalar finite element spaces. The finite element spaces we consider are constructed starting from a given finite dimensional space of ve...
متن کاملA nonconforming finite element method for a two-dimensional curl-curl and grad-div problem
Abstract. A numerical method for a two-dimensional curl-curl and grad-div problem is studied in this paper. It is based on a discretization using weakly continuous P1 vector fields and includes two consistency terms involving the jumps of the vector fields across element boundaries. Optimal convergence rates (up to an arbitrary positive ) in both the energy norm and the L2 norm are established ...
متن کاملRobust Preconditioner for H(curl) Interface Problems
Here, f ∈ L(Ω) is a vector field and the coefficients μ(x) and σ(x) are assumed to be uniformly positive but may have large variations in a simply connected open polyhedral domain Ω ⊂ R. This equation arises naturally from many engineering and physical applications based on Maxwell’s equations. In some applications (see [12, 16] for example), the coefficients in (1) satisfy that μ(x)/σ(x) = c i...
